Monster Reflection
Lexie Lucius

Technology has affected me throughout this project by making it come to life. I used images from Pinterest and put them together in my mind and created an underwater creature. Other artists gave me their ideas through their work. I saw how they wanted to put their ideas in their work and I used the idea of that to create my monster. I wanted him to look nice and friendly because his role was to be a school teacher. To make him look more realistic (3D) I used gradients for shadowing underneath him to give him 3D look. I also wanted him to look like he belonged underwater, so I gave him gills, fins on his back, octopus-like arms, and a seahorse tail. I decided to stay with blues and purples as my color choice because I felt that he needed to be camouflaged in order to survive under the water.
Technology helped me outline all of the things i put down on paper but enhanced them. It gave the coloring process seem like an easier task and made my lines as smooth or rough as I wanted them to be. The most helpful tool I used was the gradient tool; I used it to make the ocean water look darker blue towards the bottom because in real life the bottom of the ocean is darkest while the top is lighter. I also used it on the setting sun above the water. I used orange yellow and dark blue to convey a setting sun in the distance over the ocean. I also used the pencil tool to make smooth outlines for my monster.
The technology I used made my options seem limitless and it allowed my imagination to flow as pleased. From the pen tool to shape-builder to the pencil tool and so many more, my monster seemed to pop out of the page. If technology wasn’t present then in my sketching process I think I would have been so overwhelmed with so many different ideas that I wouldn't know how to piece it altogether like I did. If I couldn't use technology then I would have painted using watercolor paint to make it seem like he was really underwater.
